I’m pretty stubborn when it comes to pizza. I love pepperoni; it’s my favorite. Perhaps I’ll go with extra cheese or sausage, if I’m feeling crazy. But this time I decided to rock the boat quite a bit. I had some leftover pulled pork, frozen in a vacuum sealed bag. I made a NY style pizza dough, topped it with BBQ sauce and sauteed onions, added cheese and pulled pork and there it was – a glorious BBQ pulled pork pizza with smokey pulled pork, sweet BBQ sauce and an authentic NY pizza dough. This was great!
Some NY style pizza dough recipes can be pretty elaborate. The reason is that you are making a yeast risen dough, and sadly, that takes time, especially if you want to maximize flavor within the dough. I use an overnight rise NY style pizza dough recipe. While this might not be the most convenient for a last minute pizza, it really is packed with flavor and authentic texture. Regardless, if you want, you could probably even get away with one of those pop can pizza doughs. Your call.
Tender sauteed onions are the only additional ingredient for this. Dice some yellow, white or Vidalia onions and slowly saute them in a pan over medium low heat until they start to brown and become tender..
The next part is easy. Spread out your favorite BBQ sauce all over the dough, heavily sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese all over and then add the sauteed onions and pulled pork. The pulled pork doesn’t have to be preheated because the process of cooking the pizza will take care of warming everything up.
Today I used a pizza screen to bake my pizza. However, pizza stones or even pans will work well for this. I preheated the oven for 450 degrees F and baked for about 10 minutes. During the last couple of minutes I turned the oven off and applied the broiler. This helps brown the cheese and crust a bit more, giving that authentic NY pizza oven taste and texture.
This was pretty darn good and was a fantastic way to use leftover BBQ pulled pork. I’ll definitely be using this pizza recipe again.
