How many times have we had the potential for an amazing sandwich but to only have it breakdown due to a poor choice of rolls? I get it. It’s hard to find a local bakery and the boring old bag of hamburger buns is usually all you can find. I found a few bags of Cobblestone Bread Co. Corn Dusted Kaiser Rolls and Toasted Onion Rolls which seemed extremely soft in the center but are sturdy enough to support a big tailgate burger. These rolls screamed “Garlic Bread!” to me so I came up with this pizza style sausage burger using Toasted Onion Rolls that are grilled with butter and garlic to recreate that garlic bread flavor and feel. The onion rolls have little pieces of onion on the outside which is a cool flavor addition. It’s pretty unique to serve a burger on toasty garlic bread for a tailgate or to watch a game at home. These rolls really elevate the tailgate experience. Here’s how to make double sausage burgers on garlic bread rolls:
Burgers are usually beef. No problem with that! However, have you ever tried making a burger patty from ground hot Italian sausage? Take the ground hot Italian sausage and press it into a small 1/4 lb burger patty. If you have a burger press the sausage burgers can be nice and even or just smash them down thin with your hands and keep it roughly the size of your rolls. You want these burgers thin like a fast food burger patty.
Spread some softened salted butter on the insides of the rolls and head out to the grill.
Grill the sausage burgers over direct heat until they are cooked. While the burgers are grilling sit a small oiled pan directly over the heat and sauté the fresh chopped garlic. After a few minutes flip the burgers and keep stirring around the garlic so it doesn’t burn.
Place the buttered bread on the side of the grill that does not have the direct heat and spread some of the sautéed garlic all over top of the bread. Leave the bread garlic side up so you don’t lose any of little pieces of garlic down into the grill. Place a piece of cheese directly on the cooked sausage burgers and top with about 2 tablespoons of your favorite pizza or marinara sauce. Close the grill lid for about 5 minutes. This will let the “garlic bread” roll bake to get warm and crispy and it will also melt the cheese and warm up the pizza sauce.
Remember, this final baking step is performed completely over indirect heat, which means you are using the area of the grill furthest from hot coals or the lit burners, if using gas. Finishing over indirect heat is a good way to avoid burning your food while ensuring it is served warm.
Once the rolls are toasty and the cheese is melted, slide two of the burgers on a roll and serve. These double sausage burgers on garlic bread rolls are fantastic!
