How to Make a Taco Salad Shell at Home

This Homemade Taco Salad Shell recipe is easy to make at home in the air fryer or oven and don’t require any fancy molds to shape them.

All you need to make taco salad shell is a square oven safe meal prep container and a little cooking spray. Making this version way healthier than the ones you’ll find at a restaurant.

Once you have made your oven baked taco salad shell you can load it up with all your favorite taco salad toppings.

What Toppings to Put in my Taco Salad Shell

  • Ground Beef, Turkey or Chicken
  • Shrimp, Fish or steak
  • Pulled Pork, Leftover Brisket or Pulled Chicken
  • Romaine, Iceberg or Cabbage
  • Salsa
  • Sour Cream
  • Southwest Ranch Dressing
  • Guacamole/ Sliced Avocado
  • Black Olives
  • Corn
  • Black Beans

Ingredients to Make a Taco Bowl

  • Tortilla Wrap 8 inches or larger works best
  • Cooking Spray
  • Taco Seasoning (optional)

How to Make a Taco Salad Bowl

  1. Turn your oven safe container upside down and lightly spray with cooking oil
  2. Microwave tortilla for 15 seconds so its soft and pliable. Next form over the oven safe baking dish then spray the outside of the tortilla and place in the oven or air fryer for about 8-10 minutes until slightly golden.
  3. Carefully remove tortilla from the baking dish and flip over. For even crispier taco bowl place back in the oven or airfryer for additional 5 inutes or until extra crispy. Be careful not to burn the edges.

How To Make Crispy Tortilla Strips

If you don’t want to make a tortilla bowl but you still want to add something crunchy to your salad than you can make crispy tortilla strips in the air fryer instead.

Simply slice the tortilla into ¼ inch strips then cut them in half to make then shorter. Spread the tortilla strips out on the tray and lightly spray with oil then season however you like.

Air fry the tortilla strips for about 6-8 minutes at 400 until crispy. These are a great topping for soups and salads of all kinds

Yes, Ive tried this method with whole wheat, spinach, low carb and corn tortillas and they all worked great. Each one has a slightly different texture but all of the Tortilla bowls came out crispy.

Can I make taco bowls ahead of time.

Yes, you can make them up to 2 days ahead. after the tortilla bowls are cooked let them cool completely then stir them in a large sealed freezer bag or a sealed container.
