How to Grill Asparagus
Ingredients
- Asparagus
- Avocado Oil
- Italian Seasoning
- Grated Parmesan
- Lemon
- Seasoned Salt
Instructions
- Wash off the asparagus and pat dry with a paper towel. Take one spear of asparagus and hold one inch in from the tip at both ends. Bend the spear, putting slightly more pressure on the stem end until it snaps. Cut the remaining asparagus to the same length
- Drizzle with avocado oil and toss so that all the spears are coated. Add Italian seasoning, seasoned salt, and grated parmesan and toss again.
- Heat the grill to about 400 degrees F. Place the spears on the grill grates in the opposite direction of the grates in a single layer. Grill for about 5 minutes, then start moving them around to grill on all sides. Depending on thickness, it should take 8-10 minutes total.
- Grab one spear and bite into it. The spear should be tender but not floppy and be able to hold up and not bend in half. Serve immediately
Pro Tips
Leftovers: Asparagus is at its best lightly grilled fresh. If you do have leftovers, I like to chop the spears into one-inch pieces and add them to stir fry, risotto, or even salads.
Indoor Grilling: If you have a grill plate or any cast iron skillet, you can grill the asparagus on your stove. Make sure to turn on the fan, and you might want to pick up a splash guard for the oil that pops out.
Asparagus Size: Depending on the variety and the season, the size of the asparagus will vary. If you can, look for spears about as thick as a pencil. If they are super thin, you'll need to cut your cooking time in half. If the spears are really thick, you can use a vegetable peeler to thin them out.
Asparagus Tips: when you cut off the fibrous woody stems, you can save them for stocks or finely chop them into thin discs to add to soups and rice dishes
Grilling Time: Less is more when grilling asparagus. Remember that when you remove the spears from the grill, they will continue to cook, so if they are already fully cooked, they will be mushy by the time you serve them.
What to serve Asparagus With
Asparagus is incredibly versatile. You can serve it with pork, beef, chicken, or any type of fish or seafood. I especially love serving asparagus with salmon.
Asparagus can also be wrapped in bacon or prosciutto if you want to add a salty pork twist.
