What are Hot Dog Burnt Ends?
Smoked hot dog burnt ends are the ends of the hot dog chopped off and cooked.
The hot dogs start out by being smoked whole (this allows the ends to crisp, but the middle stays moist) and then bathed in a mouthwatering coating of honey, butter, sugar, mustard, and BBQ rub.
These bite-sized burnt ends make for an excellent snack, yummy appetizer, and are just honestly, downright addictive!

How to Smoke Hot Dog Burnt Ends
Preheat. Preheat the pellet grill to 250 degrees F.
Score the hotdog (optional). Using the slotdog press down on the hot dogs to leave score marks. This is an optional step but it looks really cool and it allows more smoke and rub into the meat.
Season and smoke. Next, place the hot dogs in a 9x13 pan and coat with beer mustard then sprinkle on your favorite dry rub. Once the dogs are seasoned place the dogs directly onto the grates on the pellet grill and smoke for 1 hour.
Cut into thirds. Once the dogs have developed a crust remove them from the grill and cut them into thirds. Place the hot dog burnt ends back into the same 9x13 pan and top with brown sugar, honey, bbq sauce, and sliced butter.
Smoke. Take the hot dogs back to the smoker and cook for another 30-45 minutes until the hot dogs have a deep mahogany color.
Enjoy. Serve and enjoy.
Wood/Pellet Chips
Wood chips or Pellet Chips are great when you are smoking something for a longer period of time, however, you can still have some fun here.
I used Kingsford Signature pellets. I really think they bring a lot to the table because it's the perfect blend of fruitwood and hardwood.
Looking for other options? Consider using Cherry wood. Cherry will have a pretty strong impact on the taste in an hour and will take sweetness to the flavor.
If sweetness isn't your style, you can go with something more muted like an oak or pecan.
Do Burnt Ends taste Burned?
No, not at all. In fact, if they do taste burnt, rest assured, you burned them and cooked them too long.
Hot dog burnt ends have an amazing smokey flavor from the smoking process and a beautiful coating of flavor from all the additions.
Nothing about burnt ends taste charged, burnt, or ruined.
Are burnt ends soft?
I wouldn't describe burnt ends as "soft," so much as I would chewy.
Burnt ends are cooked to perfection and are they a happy medium between tender and juicy.
