Why do they call it the Grinder Sandwich?
The term “grinder sandwich.” isn’t new in fact, the name has been around for a long while and is a common term in New England.
They say the term comes from Italian-American slang for a dock worker which is where the sandwich was made popular.
Subs or sandwiches that are made with Italian bread and piled a mile high with fixings are considered harder to chew than your average sandwich.
This mega bite of a sandwich gave us the “grinder,” because that is exactly what your teeth have to do to get a bite!
Ingredients needed for Grinder Sandwiches
Bread: This recipe will make you 1 giant grinder sandwich, so grab your favorite sub roll or hoagie roll. I like soft tender bread that melts in your mouth. I find that it pairs best with a grinder because you are biting through so much.
Submarine Oil: You can buy a similar pre-made version at the store, but I like to make my own. After you slice the bread open, hit it with 1 tbsp of olive oil, ½ tsp of Italian seasoning, ¼ tsp of crushed red pepper flakes, and 1 tsp of grated parmesan cheese.
Sliced Cheese: I used 6 slices of provolone cheese, but you can use whatever you have on hand
Tomato: Grab 1 big and juicy tomato and slice it thick! Pro-Tip: Don’t forget to add a little salt to the tomato slices.
Deli Meat: Pile your sandwich high with only the best like ¼ lb of salami, ¼ lb of mortadella, ¼ lb of pepper ham, and ¼ lb of capicola.
Ingredients needed for a Grinder Salad
The salad for this sandwich really talks, so you don’t want to miss out or skip on any of the ingredients.
To make the salad you are going to need ½ head of Iceberg lettuce, ½ of a thinly sliced red onion, 2 tbsp of mayonnaise, 1 tbsp of Deli Hots, 2 tbsp of red wine vinegar, 1 tsp of Italian dressing, and ¼ cup of banana peppers.
How to Make an Italian Grinder Sandwich
Prepare the salad. Prepare the salad by thinly slicing iceberg lettuce and onion and adding them to a large bowl.
Add salad ingredients. Next add mayonnaise, deli hots, red wine vinegar, Italian seasoning, and banana peppers along with salt and pepper to taste. When done, toss to combine and let chill in the fridge.
Prepare the bread. Cut your bread in half with a sharp knife and scoop out some of the extra bread to make room for the toppings. Drizzle both sides with olive oil then top with Italian seasoning, parmesan, and red chili flakes if you like a little kick.
Toast the bread. Once your bread is ready, bake for 3-5 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. This is just long enough to get a light toast as we will crisp up the bread again after we add the meat and cheese.
Assemble the sandwich. Begin stacking your cold cuts, and fold or crinkle up the slices to add texture and height to the sandwich. Once your meat mountain is piled high layer on the cheese.
Toast the sandwich. Once you are done assembling your sandwich, bake in the oven with the sandwich open-faced for 6-8 minutes at 400 degrees F to get that nice crusty bread.
Bon Appétit. Now that your sandwich is toasted and ready, cut it up how you’d like and enjoy!
