Pepperoni Roll
From what I have heard, this appetizer has gone by a few different names. Some call it a stromboli and some call it pepperoni bread.
I, however, like to call it a pepperoni roll. However, it really doesn’t matter what you call it, as long as you follow along, it will taste absolutely amazing.
When football is on, the only thing that matters most is having the snacks to pair with it!
But no one wants to spend all day in the kitchen when the game … or games, depending on how big of a football fan you are, are on tv.
And that is what I love most about this pepperoni roll tailgate appetizer. It’s simple, easy-to-make, not time consuming, and has flavors that will blow you off the field!
In total, there are only 7 ingredients. So whether you make it at home and toss it on the grill while tailgating or make it in advance and toss it on the grill before the game at home, it heats up in just a few minutes and you’re … pun intended … ready to roll.
Pepperoni Roll Ingredients
Dough: For this recipe, I used Pillsbury pizza dough. However, you can use any brand of pizza dough or make your own if you are feeling ambitious!
If you are accustomed to making your own pizza dough and use Pillsbury pizza dough, note, it is much softer than homemade dough.
Meats: It’s time to toss on the meat! For this you will need: ¼ pound of genoa salami and ¼ pound of sandwich pepperoni. My go-to brand for pepperoni is Hormel.
Cheeses: Pile on the cheese with ¼ pound of sliced mozzarella cheese and ¼ pound of sliced provolone cheese
Peppers: Sweet peppers. My go-to brands for sweet peppers are Marconi or Mezzetta; both can be found at your local grocery store.
Semolina Flour: Stone ground finely ground flour
Olive Oil: Helps add color and flavor to the crust
Parmesan: Grated parmesan adds flavor and texture to the crust
Pro-Tip: I mentioned making your own pizza dough above. I’m all about making my own pizza dough so go for it if you’d like! It’s easy to do, just make sure you budget time to let your dough rise!
How To Make A Pepperoni Roll
Preheat: Start by preheating your oven to 425 degrees F.
Lining. Line a baking pan with Parchment paper and toss some semolina flour on the bottom to prevent sticking.
Spread. Next, spread the pizza dough into a rectangle across the pan.
Meats and cheeses: There’s no rules as to how you do this step. Whichever order you’d like to fill in the meats and cheeses will work. I went bottom to top with the Provolone, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni and sweet peppers
Roll. After you have your meats and cheeses on the dough, it’s now time for closure. Carefully fold in the ends of the dough.
Then fold over the sides of the dough with a slight pinch to the areas where the dough meets. Brush with Olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese
Cook. Flip it over on the seam then Brush with Olive oil and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese. Make slits across the top every inch or so to help release steam as well as a guide for slicing afterwards.
Place pepperoni bread in the preheated oven.Bake for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Use your eyes as a guide, you want to brown it without burning it.
Serve or travel. After it’s done cooking you can either serve it if the tailgate is at your place. If you’re heading to the stadium, then wrap it in aluminum foil.
Once you’re ready to serve, toss the foil directly over the heat and flip it over often to make sure it is reheated throughout.
How To Serve A Pepperoni Roll
After you’re done cooking and ready to serve it, simply cut the roll into slices to enjoy!
As for dipping sauces, it’s really whatever you prefer. Marinara sauce is a classic choice for this dish but my Spicy Cherry Pepper Aioli is amazing with the pepperoni bread.
How To Store Pepperoni Rolls
The best way to store it is to store it in an airtight container. Place the airtight container in the fridge, and they should be good for up to 3 days.
As for serving them after they’ve been refrigerated, some people prefer to eat them cold. It’s perfectly fine to not heat them up again.
However, I prefer to heat them back up when I have them as leftovers. You can reheat them in the oven, toaster oven, or the microwave.
Can You Freeze Pepperoni Rolls?
Yes, just store it in an airtight container before placing it into the freezer. Once in the freezer, they should stay good for up to 4 months.
